Child and Adolescent Fellowship Program

Mississippi has a vast shortage of mental healthcare providers, especially for children and adolescents. According to the American Association of Medical Colleges’ 2015 State Physician Workforce Data Book, Mississippi has only one child psychiatrist per every 20,000 children.  Therefore, the adult psychiatry residency and the child and adolescent fellowship have joined together to offer an integrated training program for child and adolescent psychiatry. This integrated track allows an applicant to match directly into both their adult residency and child fellowship at the same time, negating the need for a second application process for those who know they desire a fellowship position in child and adolescent psychiatry.  The curriculum for this 5-year track (with 3 years spent in the adult psychiatry residency before transitioning to the 2-year child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship) allows for earlier, more in-depth exposure to pediatrics for those who already know they wish to serve this vulnerable and crucial population.  Please see the block diagram below for more information about the rotations available through the integrated child and adolescent program.

Our primary goal is to train competent, caring child and adolescent psychiatrists who will feel comfortable treating patients of any age.  If you are interested in applying for the child and adolescent program, applications are accepted annually through ERAS.  Please see the Adult Psychiatry Applications page for application preferences for the program.  Mississippi has a diverse population, and we celebrate that diversity within our department and our training programs, welcoming all qualified applicants.
